Tokkuri ( Sake Vassel ) with a prawn painting ( Ebi-E ).

Noboru Ohgami, the first generation of Shoyogama is the person started painting a prawn on ceramics in Tamba-Sasayama. There are few assumptions of why he picked a prawn to paint, even though Tamba-Sasayama has always been surrounded by Mountains and trees. You do not see prawns around at all.

Yutaka Ohgama, the second generation and Yuki Ohgami, the third generation believe that Noboru Ohgami painted a prawn to show the wish of a long healthy life. " Live a long life healthy and energetic like a prawn jumps around."

This Ebi-E was passed down and still painted by Yutaka Ohgami, Yuki Ohgami and also people who used to be Yutaka's apparentices.

Ebi-E is painted by a skilled craftsman using a paint brush and dropper with a mixture of soil from Tamba-Sasayama and water. I hope you enjoy the earthy texture and cool prawn painting on this tokkuri. Also this makes a beautiful present for your family and friends.

Pottery crafts which are produced in Tamba-Sasayama area, is called Tambayaki. As one of six oldest kilns in Japan, it has supported people's lives for more than 800 years. Tambayaki is an earthenware produced from a climbing kiln on the slope of a mountain and has many products that are familiar to people's daily lives, are known of its warm and earthy texture and colour.

Shoyogama was founded in 1968 by the first generation, Noboru Ohgami. While preserving the long-established tradition of Tambayaki pottery, the will to continue manufacturing products that constantly offer new proposals for people's ever-changing lives has been passed down to the second generation, Yutaka Ohgami and the third generation, Yuki Ohgami.
